Prairie Rose Shuffle
Annie Booth’s middle school level piece, "Prairie Rose Shuffle" offers a bluesy call-and-response melody with elegant interludes interspersed throughout. A fun breakdown begins at Letter E, built up by adding sections of the ensemble one by one. The solo section takes place over two dominant chords a whole step apart - bluesy without being a 12-bar blues form - and everyone in the ensemble is given chord changes. Included is an Improv Resource with two written solos that students can play and expand upon, along with questions to prompt discussion and exercises to help students take their improvisational skills to the next level.
“Prairie Rose Shuffle” was commissioned by the Southeast Middle School Jazz Studio in Iowa City, IA under the direction of Jonah Prall.
