Annie Booth’s "Together in the Groove" speaks to the spirit of collaboration in jazz music: listening deeply, working as one, and creating something magical together.
“Together in the Groove” features a playful melodic structure with somewhat of a “call and response” character, supported by colorful harmonies. At rehearsal mark C, the full ensemble quite literally comes together in the groove, locking into a bold unison rhythm. Sudden dynamic shifts in this section—from forte (f) to piano (p) within a single measure—add a touch of drama and energy, as does the punchy fortissimo ending!
Improvised solos are available for anyone in the ensemble. Students are encouraged to check out the included “improv resource,” which offers a written solo and ideas for exploration. Try writing your own solo and have fun experimenting—it’s a great way to grow as a musician!
Included: PDF digital downloads of full transposed score, all parts, and reference mp3.

Ellen Rowe's "Larkin's Lament" is a lyrical ballad inspired by her sister's mischievous kitten, Larkin, whose endless adventures were often met with the gentle refrain, "Not for kittens!" The piece playfully tells the story of his imagined "persecution," with that familiar phrase woven throughout the music as a recurring musical motif. Expressive and filled with subtle humor, Larkin's Lament offers ensembles a beautiful showcase for lyrical ballad playing.

Shamie Royston's "Windsoar" was written to depict a feeling of calmness while maintaining forward motion through life. Much like a breeze moving through the wind, the music travels between moments of peaceful stillness and powerful intensity — emotions and experiences everyone encounters at some point in life.
Written primarily in a straight eighth-note feel in 12/8, the piece occasionally shifts into 10/8, creating subtle changes in momentum and energy. It is important that the music flows naturally from one section to the next—especially through the meter changes—so the overall arc remains seamless, expressive, and groovy.
The improvised solo beginning at Letter E is offered for Alto Saxophone 1, Tenor Saxophone 1, and Trombone 1. The solo section builds into a full ensemble tutti at Letter H before melting into a quieter, more reflective passage, echoing the work's continual movement between strength and serenity.
Windsoar invites performers and listeners alike to embrace each musical moment, trusting the journey as it unfolds together.

Ayn Inserto’s Notorious R.B.G. was commissioned by the Jazz Education Network as a tribute to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg embodied intellect, resilience, and quiet strength—qualities that permeate this piece.
The music channels that same sense of cool confidence, poise, and quiet power. Set over a medium hip-hop groove infused with swung eighth notes, it strikes a balance between swagger and sophistication. Performers are encouraged to embrace the intentional dissonances, playing them boldly and unapologetically—echoing Justice Ginsburg’s fearless spirit.
The composition features an open solo section, inviting improvisation from any instrument, and a vibrant saxophone soli that showcases the ensemble’s collective voice.
