Premiered by the US Navy Commodores at the Midwest Conference in 2015, Jessika Smith's award-winning piece "Cyan Thread" is a groovy, Latin-inspired composition that features a soaring melody in solo alto saxophone.
Cyan Thread's intuitive phrase structures and haunting harmonies create a warm yet mysterious musical ambiance. And Smith's use of tiered backgrounds and varied timbres add a playful and lively touch to this tune, which includes solo space for alto saxophone and piano.
Cyan Thread was the winning piece for the 2015 National Band Association Young Composer Jazz Competition, and is the first winning piece by a female composer.
