Nadje Noordhuis's elegant composition, "Mercy Dance," was initially crafted for jazz quartet, and has been recorded twice as part of duo albums. Here for the first time, it's been skillfully arranged for large jazz ensemble by Vanessa Perica. Drawing inspiration from European jazz, particularly that associated with the German ECM record label, the piece exudes a captivating ambiance through its minor melodies and straight-8th feel. The uneasy mood of this piece is dictated by a constant and haunting two-note ostinato.
Mercy Dance gracefully fluctuates in intensity while maintaining understated elegance throughout the piece. The solo feature for flugelhorn is nicely complemented by the standard big band instrumentation.
